Honoring a local American Hero

On July 3, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation I introduced to rename part of Interstate 990 the Staff Sgt. William R. Wilson III Memorial Highway. Staff Sgt. Wilson served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and died during his third combat tour on March 26, 2012 while training Afghan soldiers and police in the Paktika Province. William distinguished himself among 600 soldiers as one of two top squad leaders in his battalion and was posthumously awarded both the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. This highway naming will serve as a lasting tribute to a young man who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country.
